CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Considering the dimensions of globalization and how this factor affects both national and international companies, it is important to mention a concept that is closely linked to globalization and its economic aspect, which is Corporate Social Responsibility.

However, what is Corporate Social Responsibility? according to what Cajiga (n.d.) mentioned, while Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is inherent to the company, it has recently become a new form of management and do business, in which the company ensures that its operations are sustainable in economic, social and environmental terms, recognizing the interests of the different groups with which it is related and seeking the preservation of the environment and the sustainability of future generations. It is a business vision that integrates respect for people, ethical values, community and the environment with the management of the company, regardless of the products or services it offers, the sector to which it belongs, its size or nationality (p.2)

As it is stated before, Corporate Social Responsibility covers several aspects of a company internally and externally, that is to say aspects such as work life, company ethics, customers and even those related to the environment.

According to the Latin American Quality Institute (2014), a responsible company means, in simple terms, to assume and respond to actions and consequences.

In addition, Corporate Social Responsibility can be divided into different dimensions and levels of responsibility depending on, as Cajiga (n.d.) pointed out, the relation to the different needs, expectations and values that constitute the being and task of people and societies with the ones that interact. (p.5)

These dimensions are:
  • Internal economic dimension
  • External economic dimension
  • Internal social dimension
  • Socio-cultural dimension and foreign policy
  • Internal ecological dimension
  • External ecological dimension

Moreover, Cajiga (n.d.) claimed that Corporate Social Responsibility is only understood by recognizing four basic or strategic lines or areas that explain its presence in all company activity. Those include their respective subtopics, which may change from one country, one sector or one company to another. These are:
  • Ethics and Corporate Governance.
  • Company Life quality (social dimension of work).
  • Connections and commitment to the community and its development.
  • Environment care and preservation. (p.6)

Finally, it is concluded that Corporate Social Responsibility, rather than being a problem that affects the company, is a commitment that enables the company to develop in the different basic and strategic areas of an organization's functionality.
